ENVR87 “Sacred Mountain”
This Environmental Studies seminar offers an introductory exploration of mountain environments in religious and spiritual traditions, considering mountains as sites of divine encounter and revelation, pilgrimage, contemplation, and poetic imagination. As part of its experiential component, the seminar includes a weekend wilderness experience in the mountains of Southern California. A non-refundable $120 program fee covers transportation, food, and equipment for the weekend trip.
“Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of nature’s darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” – John Muir
