First/Transfer Year Experience

UC San Diego’s Eleanor Roosevelt College invites incoming students to enroll in ERC 1 First Year Experience (FYE) and ERC2 Transfer Year Experience in Fall 2020.  These courses are designed for new students at UC San Diego and provide critical skills and valuable resources to facilitate engagement and foster academic success and personal enrichment.  Both are 2-credit courses with one hour of faculty-led lecture (Wednesdays, 3-4pm ERC1; 4-5 ERC2) and one hour of student-led discussion section each week. These course are taught by Matthew Herbst, Faculty Director of the Making of the Modern World Program, and sections will be led by undergraduate discussion leaders who have received specialized training. There are FYE and TYE courses in each undergraduate college at UC San Diego.  Topics include:  Tips on learning, time management, professional development and career readiness, internships, research opportunities, and academic enrichment opportunities, wellness, community connections and student involvement, enrollment advice, enrichment opportunities, work study and basic needs,

Research indicates that students who complete a First Year Experience course are more likely to engage in collaborative learning activities, interact more frequently and confidently with faculty, and perceive their campus environment as being more supportive.
